Hello to all clarinetists in the Clarinet Mentors Community! Happy Thanksgiving to all of my Canadian Clarinet Friends! For the rest of the world, I am thankful that you are here in my clarinet community. Please enjoy the great training in today's Clarinet Mentors newsletter.
I have had a busy fall. Opera is back in session, and I am currently playing in the Vancouver Opera's production of La Traviata. I recently accepted a clarinet teaching position at the University of British Columbia, which I am really enjoying. I love working with my musical colleagues, especially Jose Franch-Ballester, who is in charge of the program. Here is a fun video of the UBC Clarinet Studio performing an arrangement of 9-1/2 by Nino Rota. I am playing along on bass clarinet. Those of you who were at Clarinet Celebration in Portland will recognize the music.
After eating a bunch of turkey tomorrow, I look forward to upcoming chamber music performances, more opera and even playing an arena rock concert with The Who (accompanied by a symphony orchestra). My life is never dull these days.

FREE TRAINING -Train Your Body To Play High Clarinet Notes More Easily
High notes are often problematic for us. In a recent Clarinet Mastery Live Training session (which you can find out about at www.PlayClarinetNow.com) I presented an exercise which I have been using with many of students lately, very successfully. This exercise is designed for people who are already playing some higher notes, but if you are a more beginning player, you may be able to adapt it for your own level. It is especially designed for intermediate players. Watch this training here:
Michelle Recommends -Duo Clarinet Thumb Rest Cushion
These are my favourite clarinet thumb rest cushions. They are very comfortable, and the larger one fits on extra wide thumb rests (like on my Backun clarinets), while the smaller fits most conventional thumb rests. It really makes a difference to comfort on your thumb. Plus, if you like to have something a bit different, they come in a variety of interesting colours. I confess, that I go with basic black, but if you want pink, they have it!
